Facebook photo challenge day 3

And so to day 3 of the Facebook,  #challengeonnaturephotography,  photo challenge!     In the previous post I said we'd be exploring different sub-themes and genres,  well I guess today's image is about storytelling.     During my time in Tanzania I was fortunate enough to witness the annual migration of the wildebeest including the crossing of the Mara River by large numbers of animals.    This,  the day 3 image,  is one of a whole series of photos that I captured,  indeed I compiled a decent sized image gallery on this subject.  (check out the link!)

Who knows what goes on in the mind of a wildebeest?   In this case,  having made it across the river and into the shallows of the opposite bank,  animals pause at the sight of a less fortunate individual who lies dead in the water.    Rather than repeat it here,  check out the background story at:  Crossing the Mara River.

In keeping with the previous two posts,  here are a couple of images that I considered for the 7 day challenge but in the end,  didn't select.    The image below is also of wildebeest in the Serengeti,  but in this instance they were running across dry ground and provided a great opportunity to experiment with some pan and blur techniques.

Another image I considered was this lion shot (below).    It's not that I don't like the image,  indeed it's an image I'm quite proud of,  but I used another lion image for day 1 of the challenge and wanted to ensure there was some variety among the chosen 7.    This image has garnered more commentary and kudos than just about any image I've published.    It was an image that was almost ruined by a mistake on my part and serves as testament to the forgiving nature of digital capture.     A more detailed explanation can be found at:  Lion Sunrise Patrol

Tomorrow,  I'm thinking,  feathers....  stay tuned.   :-)    ~KD
