Ivory Gull, Svalbard

Whilst some birds are seen in substantial numbers on Svalbard during the arctic summer,  others are seen more rarely.   One such case is the ivory gull.    We observed this beautiful bird as it landed to feed on a piece of discarded seal meat.    It was so intent on feeding that with a careful slow and low approach we were able to get close enough for frame filling images using telephoto lenses,  in my case the 500mm F4.0.

The key to getting an interesting shot here,  was to get the camera down to ground level.   I was laying flat on my belly on marshy ground with the lens sitting on a piece of grass.   Thank goodness for waterproof trousers.
